Western Riding
Western riding is a style of horseback riding that originated in the American West, developed to meet the needs of cowboys who worked cattle from horseback. It emphasizes a relaxed, yet precise riding style, with a focus on the rider’s ability to control the horse with minimal visible effort.
Western Trainer, Hayley Bloomquist
Hayley Bloomquist has been immersed in the horse training business since before she could walk. She is committed to the belief that equine education and opportunities should be available to everyone and that green space and animals are fundamental for the quality of life in our society.
Hayley is an exceptional equine trainer and rider. In addition to training horses, she runs the Horsemanship Day Camps for youth during the summers and school holidays. Her teaching style is relaxed and confident, and she has trained many a rider to be successful in the show ring. She offers lessons to children and adults to be competent horsemen.
Western Pleasure Trainer, Michele Bloomquist
Michele Bloomquist has spent over forty (40) years as a trainer in Western Riding. She has experience in all facets of horse training, from breaking colts and fillies to training and retraining adult horses. She can prepare even the most novice of riders for horse shows with excellent results.
Michele began riding at Lakewood Equestrian Center when she was a girl and eventually was hired as a trainer in her teen years. She is a very accomplished rider and has trained at Rancho Del Rio in Anaheim, returned to Lakewood, Rancho Rio Verde and is currently training at Lakewood.
Hunters Jumpers & Equitation Trainer, Sandie Mercer
Sandie Mercer grew up on horses from age two, riding and showing hunters jumpers and equitation, saddle seat, and western.
At 15, she started teaching hunt seat lessons and training hunter/jumper horses at Equestrotel Stables in Long Beach, CA. In 1986, she came to the Lakewood Equestrian Center and has had her business, Sandie Mercer Ranch Inc., there until today.
Over the years, Sandie and her clients have won many local and national medals, including year-end championship awards within the OC, LA, and SFV AHSA, and regional divisions in Southern California.
Sandie has always had a public riding school to accommodate clients who do not have their own horses to learn on and get started in the show ring, and she has done weekly summer camps every year through this program. Safety and learning good horsemanship have always been very important in all of her programs
English Riding
English riding is a more formal and precise style of horseback riding, often associated with elegance and tradition. English riding is practiced worldwide and is a common style in equestrian competitions.
Dressage Trainer, Stephanie Field
Stephanie Field has been riding and training horses for over forty years, and has been a Dressage trainer for the past twenty years, focusing on Adult Amateur and Junior riders achieving their goals. Stephanie is a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist, and has been the head Dressage trainer at the Lakewood Equestrian Center for eighteen years. Assistant Dressage Trainer, Sonya Jahn
Sonya Jahn took her very first riding lesson at Lakewood Equestrian Center when she was 9, and continues to be an integral part of the Lakewood Equestrian community. Sonya joined Stephanie Field Dressage in 2014 as the Assistant Trainer, focusing on beginner and intermediate riders helping them succeed in their Dressage goals.
